SELECTION OF KITSCH PRODUCTS - CALANDER, TOWELS, MUGS, KEY CHAINS, CARPET,
There has been a noticeable change in how women expose themselves on social media since the selfie-trend platforms such as Instagram have been introduced within the digital world.
There seems to be more freedom in deciding who can be a model and who can promote body positivity; but this in turn, has also offered a greater chance for the female body to spend countless time in front of a mirror - in order to post a selfie. Often these selfies are accompanied with a short caption promoting self love and care.
In this project, I have worked with fifteen very diverse characters, whose bodies and personalities have been observed online. I have worked with these participants to assert a strong, collective voice, showing the female body as active creators of their online image.
The outcome has been a collection of kitsch merchandise - mugs, calander and towels - taken the role of Instagram, and display the women's bodies as products. The difference is that these bodies are not just narcisstic passive objects but belong to women who have control over how they are portrayed. Self -love does not need to be captioned
