'I AM THE BILLBOARD'
PHOTOGRAPHY PERFORMANCE PUBLIC SPACE
SHOT BY ETIENNE FARELL
This public space performance has been initiated towards my mission as both an image maker and a performer to provoke a change towards 'fashion' in Malta, where the issue is not even by whose gaze it is but actually towards the lack of diversity in female bodies being represented. The female is constantly being represented over sexualised for the purpose to sell.
'I am the billboard' campaign shows me in three stages:
1. Fuq Pedestal - meaning 'On top of the world' where I am on top of the billboard posing seductively to the cars passing by trying to get their attention as this is the intention of the billboard afterall.
2. L'Ishuna - meaning 'On Heat' where my body pose is reflecting drawing more attention to myself rather than the car itself, something very common in sexualised adverts
3. 'Ghabbieni' - meaning 'take me back with you' where my intention is to try everything I can to sell
The outfit itself with the male body shirt of a topless six pack reflects mixture of message - topless because female nipples are still censored on both online and offline media? , Six Pack because it shows idealised power and strength or else the polished images on Photoshop where the girl has to look perfectly without tummy flaws or fat rolls? The shirt of a man's body because fashion photography in Malta is still male dominated? A lot of questions which can be all reasons altogether but mostly this shirt have been chosen to create a contrast and raises questions.
